Melatonin

Melatonin tablets (TI-Melatonin)

This is yet another hormone which has shown to decline as we age. Melatonin is excreted while we sleep and its main use is to regulate sleep. Melatonin is considered to be a potent antioxidant and is used to treat age related sleep disorders and jet lag. Use at bed time only.

The pineal gland produces the hormone Melatonin in large amounts before puberty and decreases thereafter. It is the light sensitive hormone which induces sleep in the absence of light and it effects the body’s internal clock and sleep cycle. The decrease in melatonin may explain why less sleep is taken or needed as we age.

Melatonin supplementation is generally used by those who have trouble sleeping or adjusting to time changes when travelling (jet lag). It is also used by those people looking to optimise their health and extend their longevity. Melatonin maintains a youthful pineal function and administration prevents the aging pineal gland from producing it. Some medical professionals believe that Melatonin protects the pineal gland until it recovers its vitality.

Many claims have been made to melatonin's miraculous powers, declaring that it can improve health in many diverse ways but please bear in mind that most of this information has been concluded from animal experiments. In fact, the medical establishment is divided on the issue of Melatonin. It has been agreed that it is a great sleep inducer and has powerful antioxidant effect but we will not know the impact of long-term melatonin use for a considerable time. Melatonin's drug interactions, long-term effects and effects on various disease states are unknown. We must remember that Melatonin is a hormone. As a dietary supplement the FDA does not have jurisdiction over the production, use, and sale of melatonin. We recommend the pharmaceutical grade called TI-Melatonin from Switzerland. This brand of Melatonin also contains selenium and zinc which work synergistically with melatonin to enhance the effect.

Usual dosages are half to one 3mg tablet at bedtime only. Only use TI-Melatonin when you are prepared to sleep and have the light switched off. The proper melatonin dosage for insomnia is unknown, but too high a dose leads to a daytime fog of the brain like having a hangover. Other adverse reactions associated with melatonin include headache, stomach discomfort and depression.
