Nicergoline / Serimon

Nicergoline (Sermion)

This nootropic drug is an ergoloid mesylate derivitive (like Hydergine) being used in the battle to treat senile dementia. It has been found to improve mental agility through enhancing perception and vigilance. Nicergoline activates the brain’s metabolism improving arterial flow, inhibiting platelet aggregation, lowering vascular resistance and improving the use of glucose and oxygen. Animal experiments have shown that Nicergoline increases nerve growth factor in the aged brain. Accordingly, it is used to treat migraines of vascular origin, occasional blood supply difficulties, sticky blood platelets, limb blood irrigation and lung blood circulation.

Nicergoline is an ergot derivative similar to Hydergine and is most commonly used in the battle against senile dementia. It has been in use for over thirty years and is currently in use in over fifty countries. It is useful when treating older people for cognitive and behavioural disorders.

Clinical studies on nicergoline have been carried out using diverse criteria and have generally presented positive and consistent results for cognition and behaviour. Nicergoline has an action within the brain which activates metabolism and improves blood flow and improves the utilization of glucose and oxygen. Nicergoline enhances perception and clarity of thought. Other experiments have shown that Nicergoline increases nerve growth factor in the aged brain.

Although this drug is commonly used for treating chronic cerebral infarction, it may also have a protective effect on the progression of Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's Disease. Nicergoline is also being used to help treat migraines, blood supply problems, sticky blood platelets, lung blood-circulation and macular degeneration.

Persons suffering from acute bleeding, heart conditions, hypertension or using alpha or beta receptor agonists should consult with their physician before use. Caution should be observed if using Inderal (propanolol).

When treating chronic cerebral infarction or a senile dementia prescribed dosages could be as much as 60mg daily. When used for anti-aging purposes the normal dose is usually 5mg once or twice a day. In clinical trials Nicergoline has generally been shown to be safe with minor side effects. Over stimulation could occur if combining with other nootropic drugs like piracetam. As with all nootropic products occasional breaks are recommended, for example 1-week per month or 2-days per week.
