Olmifon / Adrafinil

Adrafinil (Olmifon)

Olmifon and Modafinil are in a unique class of drugs called eugeroics. Eugeroic means good arousal. Their uniqueness lies in their ability to stimulate only when stimulation is required. They do not affect normal sleep patterns and have been designed to treat narcolepsy, hypersomnia and catoplexy.

Modafinil is a selective agonist to the brain receptor sites to the neurotransmitter – Norepinephrine. Norpinephrine appears to regulate alertness and the waking/sleep cycle. It also has the role of maintaining attention, memory and learning. Modafinil was described by the Aerospace Medical association to be more like caffeine than amphetamines in terms of safety and yet as effective as amphetamines.

The difference between the two products is that Adrafinil (Olmifon) may not be so highly selective and may in a small way affect other alpha receptors. It has also been attributed to some possible side effects that as yet have not been associated with Modafinil. In particular an increase of liver enzymes after a period of three months continuous use. This will need a blood test to monitor.
